Worst flooding in Bolivia's Pando province displaces thousands

Recent flooding in Bolivia has displaced more than 4,000 people in the town of Cobija after the river Acre burst its banks.

"Bolivia's Vice President met with emergency officials delivering food supplies to this northern region bordering Brazil, and called this the worst flooding the area has seen in years," Reuters has written.

Heavy rains have also caused the nearby river Tahuamanu to burst its banks.

The mayor of San Pedro de Bolpebra, on the border with Peru and Brazil, said BBC that his town had been almost completely swept away by floodwaters.

"The river waters rose to 14m [46ft] above their normal level, so between the community and the authorities we have decided to rebuild a new town to avoid more damage," Mayor Romulo Terrazas said.

Bolivia government had declared national emergency after floods and landslides claimed lives of 30 people and displaced 21,000 families in January last year.
