Facebook is adding a feature called ‘Safety Check‘ to help its users notify friends and family that they're safe during or after natural disasters.
According to the Facebook Newsroom, Safety Check will help the users to let know their families and friends that they are safe, check on others in the affected areas and mark users friends as safe. Only user friends will see the safety status and the comments that users share.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced the feature in Japan yesterday. Facebook Safety Check disaster tool will be available globally on Android, iOS, feature phones and desktop.
When the Facebook Safety Check disaster tool is activated after a natural disaster and if user is in the affected area, user will receive a Facebook notification asking if user is safe.
Similarly, if users have friends in the area of a natural disaster and the tool has been activated, users will receive a notification about those friends that have marked themselves as safe.
A report released by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) today has shown some 100 million people affected by natural disasters worldwide in 2013.
According to the 2014 World Disasters Report, 337 natural disasters were reported across the world in 2013 claiming the lives of 22,452 people. In 2013, natural disasters cost 118.6 billion dollars.
