Germany heat wave sets record as 104.3 degrees hits Kitzingen

A heat wave set a record in Germany as 104.54 Fahrenheit was measured in Kitzingen, northern Bavaria, on Sunday afternoon.

"It is the highest level in Germany since measurements began in 1881," Associated Press reported. Weather service spokesman Uwe Kirsche said AP that the record would be official only after technicians manually check the station.

The previous record of 104.3 degrees Fahrenheit was measured in the southwestern city of Karlsruhe in 2003.

Heat wave has soared across Europe, reaching more than 40 degrees in Bavaria, Germany, and provoking wildfires and evacuations in Spain and Portugal. At least nine elderly people died of heat wave in Italy in last four days.
