Mount Ontake volcanic eruption in Japan kills 1, injures 30

Mount Ontake in Japan erupted on Saturday, claiming life of a person and seriously injuring more than 30 people.

More than 250 hikers have been stranded on the mountain, Japan Today reported. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has ordered the military to help in rescue efforts.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Ontake volcano erupted just before midday and sent ash pouring down the mountain’s south slope for more than three kilometers.

In the YouTube video, shocked climbers can be seen moving quickly away from the peak as an expanding plume of ash emerges above and then engulfs them.

Japan's meteorological agency has raised the alert level for Mount Ontake to 3. It has warned the people to stay away from the mountain, saying ash and other debris could fall up to 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) away, Mashable reported.

Mount Ontake (Mount Kiso Ontake) is the second highest volcano in Japan.
