Darjeeling landslides kill 30 in recent Indian natural disasters

Landslides in West Bengal's Darjeeling district of India have claimed lives of atleast 30 people on Wednesday.

Heavy rainfall triggered landslides at Tingling Tea Garden under Mirik block of Kurseong sub-division claiming lives of 20 people. At least seven died in Kalimpong sub-division, The Hindustan Times reported.

According to NDTV, road connectivity to Sikkim has been cut off due to landslides on National Highway 10. Flood near Simulbari has also swept away the Rakti bridge connecting Mirik with Siliguri.

Rescue teams from the Sashastra Seema Bal, the National Disaster Management Authority and the National Disaster Response have involved in the rescue operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to next of kin of victims. At least 2,000 people have been rescued and sheltered in 10 camps set up by the state government.
