ShelterBox to distribute shelter kits for flood-ravaged Chile

ShelterBox is working with Habitat for Humanity to distribute shelter kits to flood-ravaged Atacama region of Chile.

Shelter kits are targeted for the people whose homes have been severely damaged by flooding in the Atacama region of Chile, ShelterBox mentioned in a news published on June 18, 2015.

The Atacama region of Chile, one of the driest places on Earth, received more than seven years’ worth of rain in just 24 hours, causing massive damage to homes, buildings and infrastructure.

ShelterBox has decided to send 1,200 shelter kits to the region in partnership with fellow aid agency Habitat for Humanity. Shelter kits cannot only be used to make temporary shelters, but contain ropes, tarpaulins and tools to help clear away debris and to make repairs on structures, such as waterproofing roofs, ShelterBox mentioned.

The kits are being distributed by Habitat  for Humanity alongwith the help of the Chilean Red Cross and the regional government.

Chile's government has declared a state of emergency for the Atacama desert region after heavy rainfall triggered flooding in the region. Atacama is the driest non-polar desert in the world.

ShelterBox has also planned to distribute further 300 shelter kits to families whose houses have been damaged by the recent acivity at Calbuco volcano. The Calbuco volcano in Chile erupted for the first time in 42 years causing evacuation of thousands of people in April 2015. Chile's Onemi emergency office had declared a red alert following the eruption at Calbuco volcano.
