Kashmir flood causes chaos killing at least 17

Heavy floods and landslides have hit Jammu & Kashmir, killing at least 17 people and causing severe damage to several areas.

Authorities have shifted 269 families from landslide prone areas to the safer places in Bandipora in North Kashmir. 

Water level in river Jhelum has been receding and came down from 15.65 ft at 6 am to 14.7 feet by 7 p.m. on Wednesday, IBN Live reported.

The J&K government has declared flood alert in Kashmir, urging people living on the banks of river Jhelum to move to safer places.

Schools and colleges have been closed across the valley in view of the flood threat and ongoing examinations have been postponed, Times of India reported.

Floods and landslides in Jammu & Kashmir claimed hundreds of lives last year. Met department called Thursday and Friday as crucial as heavy rainfall are predicted for these days.

India is experiencing more extreme rainfall events as the global climate warms, Reuters has written quoting a study of 50 years of data by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.
