Indonesia dam burst triggers floods – Thousands evacuated

A dam burst in West Java province of Indonesia has triggered floods that affected over 15,000 people and caused evacuation.

The dam at Cimanuk river at Pilangsari village of Indramayu district burst on Monday and forced at least 4,000 people to flee home, Xinhua reported quoting Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster management agency.

Displaced people are in urgent need of emergency relief assistance including food and medicine, national disaster management agency added.

Poor maintenance and heavy monsoon rain caused failure of Sayano–Shushenskaya dam in Tangerang, Indonesia in 2009 which claimed lives of at least 98 people. Earlier, Sempor dam failure in 1967 claimed lives of 2,000 people in Central Java Province of Indonesia.
