Bihar storm kills 35 in latest India natural disasters

Heavy storm in Bihar, India has claimed lives of at least 32 people and seriously injured around 100 people on Tuesday night.

Strong storm hit northeastern districts of Bihar close to the borders with West Bengal and Nepal with worst damage in Purnia, Madhepura, Saharsa, Madhubani, Darbhanga and Samastipur districts, Hindustan Times reported.

The destruction was greatest in Baisi and Dagarua blocks of Purnia district where at least 26 people have died. At least 83 injured people have been admitted to Purnia hospital since Tuesday night.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Director in Patna, RK Giri said the storm packed wind speed around 65 km per hour, NDTV reported.

According to Vyas Ji, principal secretary of the disaster management department, "We have varying numbers on the deaths but at least 32 persons have reportedly died."

"We are trying to estimate the damage. Right now the emphasis is to provide disaster relief to the affected population, as well as, restore communications," IBN LIVE reported quoting Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as saying.

The Bihar Government has launched relief and rescue operations in the affected areas. A compensation of Rs. four lakh will be provided to the kin of each of the persons dead in the storm, the state government said.
