Peru declares emergency in Chosica as landslide kills 7

A state of emergency has been declared in Peruvian town of Chosica as landslide claimed lives of at least seven people and destroyed 65 houses.

According to Reuters, six people are missing and 25 have been injured in the landslide disaster in Chosica. A 60-day emergency has been declared in the district of Lurigancho-Chosica by the Government of Peru.

The adoption of such urgent measures will allow Lima and Lurigancho-Chosica Municipalities to re-establish power and water supplies, and initiate a clean-up operation in coordination with the National Institute for Civil Defense (Indeci) and various ministries, Peru News Agency (ANDINA) quoted the official gazette El Peruano as reporting.

The main road connecting Lima to the center of Peru remains blocked since Monday, police said.

A 1967 mudslide in Chosica killed 64 people. Peru landslide in 1970 killed tens of thousands people.  It was the worst catastrophic natural disaster ever recorded in the history of Peru.
