Tropical storm Chedza kills 14 in Madagascar

Tropical storm Chedza has claimed lives of at least 14 people in Madagascar, the National Office of Risk and Catastrophe Management said Monday.

Tropical storm Chedza has further displaced more than 36,000 Madagascans. Most of the fatalities are as a result of landslides caused by heavy rain and building collapses as strong winds tore roofs from houses.

According to Bloomberg, death toll from flooding across Southern African nations have reaches 260. Flooding and torrential rain have caused havoc in Mozambique, Malawi and the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar. Further, almost 300,000 people have been displaced from their homes.

Recent floods in Malawi have claimed lives of 176 people and made 200,000 homeless. President Peter Mutharika has called the floods a "national tragedy that urgently needs both local and international response".

According to Madagascar National Office for Disaster Management, a tropical storm has claimed 13 lives and displaced at least 80,000 people.
