Costa Rica’s Turrialba Volcano Eruption 2014 marks the largest eruption in 150 years

Costa Rica has issued an emergency alert following the largest eruption in 150 years at Turrialba volcano.

This Costa Rica’s Turrialba volcano eruption 2014 has merged together two of the volcano’s craters, The National Seismological Network (RSN) said Inside Costa Rica.

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) has recommended the Education Ministry to suspend classes in five cantons in Cartago province, including Turrialba, Jiménez, Alvarado, Oreamuno and Cartago, The Tico Times has written.

National Emergency Commission officials along with UNA and UCR vulcanologists are conducting on-the-ground evaluations of the volcano’s activity.

The authorities are evacuating nearby residents to temporary shelters as a precaution.

Red Cross personnel have distributed masks to the residents. 

A Yellow Alert has been declared by National Emergency Commission following the Turrialba volcano eruption 2014, and the Turrialba Volcano National Park is closed to visitors until further notice.

El 29 de octubre del 2014 el Volcán Turrialba hizo una pequeña erupción freática a las 11:10p.m. Esta erupción duró aproximadamente 25 minutos y fue caracterizada por una emisión de cenizas que fue transportada por los vientos hacia el oeste-suroeste. Las cenizas cayeron en localidades como San Gerardo de Irazú, San Ramón de Tres Ríos, Coronado, Moravia, Curridabat, Desamparados, Aserrí, Escazú, Santa Ana, Belén, Guácima de Alajuela, Río Segundo de Alajuela, San Pedro Montes de Oca, Guadalupe, San José, y en algunas zonas de Heredia, de acuerdo con la información proveeída por los pobladores.
