Cyclone Cleopatra kills 18 in Sardinia, emergency declared

Cyclone Cleopatra has claimed lives of at least 18 people in Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and an autonomous region of Italy.

Fatalities are from Olbia and Uras areas of the Island.

Cyclone Cleopatra dropped 450mm of rain in an hour and a half overnight prompting the government to declared a state of emergency, Itlaian newspapers reported.

Around 2,700 people are staying in community shelters or with their families.

Several bridges have been swept away in Olbia and in the region near the central town of Nuoro.

The government has allocated €20 million for emergency assistance to help the rescue and clean-up work.

Heavy rainfall also hit capital Rome and Venice.

Bad weather in Sardinia is forecast to continue on Tuesday.
