Saitama earthquake rattles Tokyo – Briefly closes subways, airport

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 hit Saitama-ken Hokubu region, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported.

According to JMA, the earthquake had an intensity of 4 in parts Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo and Kanagawa. Earthquake intensity of 3 was felt in parts of Fukushima, Yamanashi, Nagano and Shizuoka. It was 31.06 miles deep.

Buildings shook briefly in Tokyo and smartphone alerts could be heard going off in offices, Japan Today reported. According to USGS, Tokyo is located about 34 km far from the epicenter.

Earthquake briefly halted the subway trains and temporarily closed Narita Airport’s runways.

No damage or injuries have been reported.
