Idaho: Challis earthquake causes rock slides, damages property

M 4.9 moderate earthquake shakes Challis today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located just 7 km E of Challis, Idaho. It was 5.1 miles deep.

The Challis earthquake caused rock slides, damaged homes and knocked out power around Custer County, Reuters has reported.

According to Linda Lumpkin, Custer County Sheriff's Office dispatch supervisor in Challis, "the Challis earthquake on Saturday went on for a good nine or ten seconds, leaving people feeling a little rattled."

The Borah Peak earthquake (1983) is the largest ever recorded earthquake in Idaho. Magnitude 7.3 Idaho earthquake claimed two lives and caused $12.5 million in damage in the Challis-Mackay area.
