PNG landslide kills mother and five-month-old baby

A mother and five-month-old daughter have died in a landslide in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

Father and two daughters however managed to escape the natural disaster.

The landslide occurred in the Kavarong town site of Panguna in Central Bougainville after the area had received heavy rainfall.

Mother was found holding tightly onto five-month-old baby under the rubble of their house, PNG Post-Courier mentions.

The National Disaster Centre and Weather Centre in Port Moresby has warned more rainfall and unprecedented weather patterns in Bougainville in coming days.

Papua New Guinea is prone to landslides mainly caused by deforestation in major forests.
