Moderate Earthquake Hits Taiwan

M 4.9 moderate shallow earthquake shakes Taiwan today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was centered near Pate, 35 km SW Taipei. It was at 7 km depth.

The island of Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes. The 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung earthquake, the deadliest earthquake in Taiwan's recorded history, killed 3,276 people. Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a state in East Asia
